Garmin nüvi 350 GPS

This unit did everything I expected straight out of the box. I was able to do most stuff without reading the manual that did not come with it. Once I poked around in the downloadable manual I was able to do LOTS more than I had ever thought about.

This is an excellent lower-priced alternative to the in-dash units offered by auto manufacturers. Not only does it cost less, maybe thousands of dollars, but the flexibility is enormous. I can use it on my bicycle or kayaking (I do take care to keep it dry). I can purchase and load topographical maps into the unit. If we go to Europe we can add those maps as well.

Most people don't need a GPS to get to their everyday job or the grocery store or those other places we go all the time. Face it, most GPS units sit unused most of the time. So, my wife and I found we could effectively share one GPS and save the cost of a second one. Not to mention the risks of ownership.

Paula frequently goes to business meetings where the location is unknown to her. She enters the address and, voila, instant directions. the nüvi tells her exactly when to turn, gives her advance audio and visual warning. If she misses a turn for whatever reason the unit immediately recalculates and gives her new information.

I recently took a three-week, 3,000 mile trip to Florida. Went to lots of places, visited my friends, rode my bike, paddled my kayak. The nüvi was a joy. I used it to find a hotel, Starbuck, State Parks and more.

  • I never seem to make it past Florence SC on the first leg of my trip but I always have trouble finding the hotel and restaurant that I like. This time I searched for Fairfield, found it, called them for a reservation and then followed the flawless directions.
  • The restaurant I like has always befuddled me. For one thing I always go there in the dark and my navigation skills drop off at dusk. For another the route is twisted. The nüvi got me there and back without going forty miles out of my way.
  • I am a big fan of Starbucks. On previous trips I had to go long stretches without my cappuccino and suffered. This time I was able to find stores easily and enjoy the trip a lot more. A caveat: the list of stores in the nüvi is not complete, there are better lists available for uploading to the unit called POI lists.

We have noticed a number of features that are subtle but incredibly helpful. One small example is the autozoom. As you drive down the Interstate nüvi zooms out but as you exit and travel the smaller streets it zooms in. Of course, you can always manually zoom in and out. Another feature I like is the ability to move the map around on the screen. Back to top...

Excellent directions. I have seldom found the directions to be different from the way I would have gone when I knew the way. In Miami my friend, the traffic engineer, confirmed the directions there. Back to top...

Enough repetition but not too much. Typically, Gladys (our name for the voice) will tell you about your next turn three times: immediately after your current turn, about 200ft before your next turn, and immediately before the turn. Obviously, if the turns are close together Gladys talks a lot. The only time I get annoyed is when she tells me about splits in the interstate. Back to top...

Logical Presentation of Data. I was prepared not to like the 3D presentation of the maps but quickly learned to love it. The route is highlighted in color and easy to follow. When searching for a place, such as a restaurant or park, the data is presented by distance, closest first. Back to top...

Great Database. There is a lot of stuff in the database that is included with the unit and there is an amazing amount of detail in the preloaded map. For the US, this device is ready to go straight out of the box. Back to top...

Not enough navigation shortcuts in the unit. After I got back I discovered that I could return to the Menu from almost anywhere by holding down the back button (buttons here are soft and on-screen) until it went there. But I really want more: I want to be able to go directly back to the map and to the top search menu. I would also like to be able to re-arrange the menu items to reduce my personal scrolling and clicking. I understand that Garmin made a choice between simplicity and power but they could have taken power a little bit further. Back to top...

Can't set defaults for some items. The biggest offender in this category is the "Search near..." option under "Where to?" If I enter a different city or "My Current Route" the nüvi forgets on my next search and I have to reset it. Second most irritating is what constitutes "...near my current route"? Five miles, ten, a hundred? Not documented anywhere that I can find. Back to top...

Lack of a QWERTY keyboard setting. Since this is a soft, on-screen keyboard there is no reason Garmin could not include a QWERTY keyboard as well as the straight ABC... There are some of us out here who know where the keys are. Back to top...

Summary

This unit is a keeper. It comes top-rated from Consumer Reports and lives up to expectations. A bit pricier than some others but the power and ease of use more than compensates. This is a buy.
